The clients requested a custom 3 bedroom home, with 2500 sq. ft. of contemporary, liveable space, incorporating current energy efficient and sustainable strategies. In addition, they wanted the design to grow from the site, taking advantage of the views, integrating with the slope, and saving the existing mature spruce grove occupying the high ground adjacent their Street.

A narrow sloped clearing dictated a long house concept oriented north / south, built over multiple levels and focused on the River at the northern edge of the property. Punctuated with a bridged entranceway at the main level, a massive 3 story sandstone fireplace on the north face, and a dramatic wedge shaped copper roof, the design is animated with balance, warmth and drama. Functions are arranged in hierarchical fashion about the lower Family Room level, the middle Living Room level and the upper Master Bedroom level.

The high performance Enclosure is built with superior insulation values in walls and in the roof. Geothermal heat pumps supply energy for in-floor heating, domestic hot water needs and air conditioning on all levels. A roof-mounted photo voltaic array on a two way meter supplies energy to the grid.

École Sainte-Thérèse is a new K-5 school on a narrow site, sandwiched between residential properties and facing onto a major municipal street in Dieppe. The Province’s mandate was to design and build its’ first school targeting LEED Silver.

Site planning segregates the property into distinct zones for play areas, pedestrian access, buses, parents’ drop-off, and staff parking. Preferential spaces for hybrid/electric cars, car pooling and bicycle parking are located close to entrances. Entries are protected from the elements and open to the east and south faces of the building. Internally, the plan focuses on a central spine that functions as front door to the public and provides access to all common functions, like the Resource Centre, Gymnasium, Cafetorium, Music Room, and Admin suite. After hours community use of facilities is easily accommodated while shutting down the remainder of school.

Features include on-site management of storm water through detention ponds near the front of the school, and a durable, high performance building enclosure and M&E systems. One factor used to great effect is daylighting, where it plays a significant role as a design motif and in reducing energy demand. Classrooms and the Resource Centre are bright and cheery, with expansive views to the exterior. Excessive solar penetration is controlled by exterior sunshades on the south facades. Even the gymnasium is daylit by large monitor skylights. Interpretive panels are installed to educate public and students alike. A test green roof is readily visible and accessible to the occupants.
